I live in the Pensacola area and had the pleasure of knowing Dr. Kent Hovind. The first time I heard him speak was in about 4th grade. He came to children’s church at Marcus Pointe Baptist Church and did a lesson on dinosaurs. The second time I heard him speak was in 4th grade at AWANA’s at Marcus Pointe Baptist Church. This sermon was the first time I heard him talk about evolution. When I in 5th grade, I heard him speak for the 3rd time. He did a sermon that I clearly still remember today, it was on how to be a good worker. He labeled the types of workers as follows(From best to worst):
1. The best worker sees something that needs to be done and then does it.
2. A good worker will do something and then ask you what you want them to do next.
3. An average worker has to be asked in order for them to do something.
4. A bad worker tries to avoid doing work.
The fourth time I heard him speak was when I was in 7th grade in the Youth Group at Marcus Pointe Baptist Church in Pensacola. The first time I heard him speak on this topic when I was in 4th grade, I took away only one thing: Creation is right. Evolution is stupid. However, I was better able to grasp what he had to say this time around. I talked to him after his speech and he let me have his book “Are You Being Brainwashed?” for free.
My father was a friend of Dr. Hovind’s and they talked on a fairly regular basis. There was one time when the choir at Marcus Pointe was invited to Dr. Hovind’s house which was located right off of dinosaur adventure land. I don’t remember what grade I was in(I was very young though), but I remember the night pretty clearly. Dr. Hovind showed us this contraption where you could sit on a tire and go down at an angle on a rope. I was too afraid to try it, but other people were having a blast with it. Since I was too afraid to go on it, Dr. Hovind took my sister and I to another section of dinosaur adventure land. After my sister and I played there for a bit, he showed us around Dinosaur Adventure Land. After he showed us around we went back inside where everyone was and the choir sang hyms while Dr. Hovind played the piano. When is the last time you’ve seen a family or even a church family at a gathering outside of church sing hymns? Such things do not seem to happen often anymore, at least around me it doesn’t.
My experience with Dr. Hovind has convinced me that he is a kind, and well meaning person. As I got older and started to fall in my relationship with God, I adopted a theistic evolution position. Over time, I went back to young earth creation. Dr. Hovind should be released from prison(He was put in prison for tax evasion, however, many believe he is innocent.) in august of 2015. He has a blog that he archives all of his posts even from before he was put in prison. However, the posts on this blog suddenly stopped in April of 2013. You can find it here: http://www.kenthovindblog.com/
However, I just found out that Dr. Hovind has a new blog with posts as recent as September 11th! According to one of his posts, he now has four doctorates and two masters degrees.(I had heard that he was doing online classes in prison, but I’m not sure where he was taking classes at.) His new blog can be found here:
